Keynote: What Really Matters in Life

Dr. Sreenivas Koka

  • The days are long, but the years are short. This quote embodies many of our challenges–the hullaballoo of the daily grind combined with looking back and asking where all the time went. How can we look back with no regrets? Let’s face it, we get little training in dental school or other venues for the challenges of being a business owner, leader, parent, or friend, even though they are the most stressful parts of our days and lives. This presentation will focus on how contented people think and behave so they can prioritize their time to bring themselves and others joy and a sense of purpose. These people are the ones who look back on their life and say they have no regrets.

  • This session will help attendees:

    • Identify what truly matters in life, and what doesn't.

    • Give themselves permission to follow the path that leads to a life without regrets.

Team Treatment Planning: A Battle of Approaches

Dr. David Mugford, Case Presenter

Dr. Woody Wooddell, Case Presenter

  • Join Dr. David Mugford and Team Maryland for an engaging and interactive session focused on collaborative treatment planning. In this session, two teams will review a patient case in advance and develop their own treatment strategies. Each team will then present their proposed treatment plan, followed by Dr. Mugford sharing the actual treatment rendered. This provides opportunity to compare different approaches to patient care, while gaining valuable insights from Dr. Mugford’s experience. Attendees will have the chance to ask questions of both the teams and Dr. Mugford, enhancing their understanding of clinical decision-making and the importance of collaborative treatment planning.

  • This session will help attendees:

    • Gain insight into real-world decision-making processes by comparing proposed treatment plans with the actual care delivered, and ask questions to refine clinical judgment.

    • Understand how differing perspectives on treatment planning can deepen knowledge of available options, improve patient outcomes, and foster a more comprehensive approach to care.

A BREAKTHROUGH IN DENTISTRY: EXTRAOSSEOUS LESIONS CAUSING OROFACIAL PAIN & RECALCITRANT INFECTION (Presented in 2D and 3D)

  • This course demonstrates a breakthrough in dentistry: extraosseous lesions (EOLs) causing orofacial pain, recalcitrant infection and/or failure to heal after properly done endodontic treatments, extractions, and implants. 2D and 3D microscopy will reveal how endodontic lesions advance outside the bone by a variety of extensions and form EOLs that cannot be seen with current radiography. It will show how EOLs can extend inside the alveolar mucosa as intramucosal lesions, and some can form complex lesions that extend to other dentoalveolar sites and anatomical structures to become multilocular lesions. Multiple cases with long-term follow-up will be presented to show how failing RCTs, implants and extraction sites were resolved when these lesions were completely removed.

The immersive 3D portion presents a variety of complex EOLs involving teeth and implants, and their role in endodontic, periodontal, peri-implant and sinus disease as well as external resorption and aggressive root caries. The use of small-FOV high resolution CBCT will be discussed, along with important new paradigms in diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment. Dental and medical implications will also be presented and related to the various types and locations of the extensions. These cases will clearly demonstrate how accurate diagnosis and treatment predictably result in (1) complete resolution of the infection and its associated symptoms, and (2) the long-term retention of the involved teeth and implants.

  • This session will help attendees:

    • List the three different locations of extraosseous base lesions on teeth.

      • List at least three ways intraosseous lesions become extraosseous.

      • Describe how extraosseous lesions match chronic orofacial pain.

      • Describe how extraosseous lesions cause persistent infection

      • List three common presentations of extraosseous lesions.
